World Refugee Day is observed every year on 20 June to celebrate the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home countries to escape conflict, persecution, or violence. According to UNHCR, there were about 117 million forcibly displaced people worldwide as of the end of June 2025. In Malaysia, approximately 200,000 refugees and asylum seekers are registered with UNHCR, with estimates suggesting the actual number may be significantly higher when unregistered individuals are included. While many come to Malaysia seeking safety, rebuilding their lives often brings a new set of challenges, including access to education, healthcare, employment, housing, and legal recognition.
In this episode, we unpack these issues with Joanne Chua, Executive Director of Asylum Access Malaysia, and Hpan Ja Brang, a refugee from Myanmar and a community volunteer.
