Nearly two-thirds of Malaysians shop online today, using online shopping platforms and digital payment solutions for all kinds of purchases, ranging from fashion and home care, to big-ticket items like electronic devices. While online shopping offers great convenience and options, there is also a risky trade-off: consumers are exposed to frauds and scams, have to deal with problematic product quality and safety, and have little to no mechanisms to resolve disputes with sellers. We explore emerging trends in e-commerce, how consumers are at risk of unsafe practices, and how to navigate consumer protection, while balancing the need for a thriving digital economy.
