Guest: Sivarasa Rasiah, Former MP, Sungai Buloh
PKR is arguably one of the most consequential political parties in modern Malaysian history. Its formation marked a turning point, as it became the platform that brought together social democrats, technocratic liberals, former UMNO figures, and even strands of political Islam. After all, Anwar Ibrahim himself emerged from ABIM before entering mainstream politics. Not only that, it also brought together fragmented parties, including the likes of DAP and PAS (and later Amanah), into a credible force capable of challenging Barisan Nasional's decades-long dominance.
Over the years, though, PKR has had to weather repeated internal crises. The Langkah Kajang episode; the rivalry between Anwar and Azmin Ali; and more recently the tensions between Anwar and Rafizi that ended sourly and resulted in the formation of another political party: Bersama.
Now, with speculation over MPs leaving the party and questions about its internal direction, many are asking whether PKR remains the best political vehicle to deliver progressive change in Malaysia. We unpack all of this and more with Sivarasa Rasaiah, former MP for Sungai Buloh, who has been a member of PKR since its early days.
