New season, same old Premier League chaos. The curtain has barely risen, but the opening weekend has already served up a few serious talking points. Tottenham were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Brentford, as Spurs’ £300 million summer spending failed to paper over familiar defensive cracks, with Brentford’s intensity and pressing exposing them from the outset. Manchester United endured an even more embarrassing afternoon, beaten 2-0 by newly promoted Hull City despite dominating possession. United struggled to turn possession into genuine chances and were punished twice from set pieces. And then there was Aston Villa, who suffered the weekend’s most brutal collapse — thrashed 4-0 by Brighton, with all four goals arriving before half-time.
